Reading a GA4 Report Without Losing Your Mind
The four numbers actually worth looking at in GA4 each week, and the five you can safely ignore until something looks wrong.
GA4 surfaces dozens of metrics by default, and most of them are noise for a weekly check-in. Four numbers are worth a standing look: sessions by channel, conversion rate by channel, average engagement time, and new vs. returning users.
Everything else — bounce rate, pages per session, scroll depth, exact event counts — is useful for a specific investigation, not a weekly ritual. Pull them only when one of the four core numbers moves unexpectedly.
Set a baseline range for each of the four numbers (not a single target, a range) so a normal week's fluctuation doesn't trigger a false alarm. Only investigate when a number moves outside that range for two consecutive weeks.
If you're reporting these numbers to a client or a boss, show the same four every time, in the same order. Consistency in what you report is worth more than completeness — a report that changes shape every week erodes trust in the data itself.
